Narrative Description of Project:
Piloting the CLASS approach in Dhari Block of Nainital district of Uttarakhand. It included:
Facilitating assessing the risks associated with the drinking water sources by carrying out sanitary survey of all (341 water sources in 32 GPs) the sources that were being used by them for drinking and cooking
Communities tested all the 341 water sources for bacteriological contamination using H2S vials
14 out of 32 GPs, communities undertook H2S vial tests of water sources again during monsoon
7 of these 14 GPs undertook water testing for a third time.
Communities in almost all the 32 GPs undertook one or more protective and remedial measures based on the results of sanitary survey and H2S vial testing of water sources including:
o repair the broken platform of hand pumps,
o boiling of drinking water,
o keeping water pots covered,
o use of chlorine tablets for treating water at household level,
o chlorination at community level by putting bleaching powder in Naulla ( traditional water source)and clear water reservoir (CWR),
o cleaning and protection of water sources and CWRs,
o contacting employees of JalSanthan to get bleaching powder and requesting them to unlock the CWR for cleaning purpose,
o change the defecation practice,
start entering in Naula without shoes/slipper while filling water containers and improved cleanliness in households.
