Narrative Description of Project:
Project envisaged for pilot WASH knowledge and practice dissemination into households, through government schools, in Kolkata (West Bengal).
· Exploring and testing multiple approaches for improving the practice of hand washing with soap to students’ households from schools.
· Compare and document the effectiveness of the multiple approaches in the context of Kolkata.
· Submit final report to Splash recommending the most suitable approach (s) along with mentioning the required methods, materials and tools
Description of Actual services provided by the staff:
· Reviewed household surveys and identified remaining gaps of knowledge / questions
· Conducted a literature review on successful household interventions relevant to targeted behavior, specific to an urban context. Special attention to those using schools as the conduit to change in the household
· Conducted formative research with community members, school staff and students to understand the behavioral determinants of target WASH behaviors and potential pathways for distributing behavior change programming Developed hypothesis for the intervention
· Worked with key stakeholders (including Splash and the target beneficiaries) to develop implementation ideas, including all necessary messaging and materials
· Determined the location of pilots (considering classification of the households based on their various socioeconomic, religious and ethnic features and also based on some other characteristics – e.g. schools with close by and far off catchment areas, schools with slum and non – slum localities etc.)
